Terrarium Setup Help

This was posted elsewhere, but has not been addressed:

...I happened upon Terrium yesterday and am very interested in participating becasue 1) I NEED to learn how WindowsForms work so I can make applications look 'DotNettie" and I come from vb6, so ALL this is new to me, 2) I've recently developed a strong interest in AI and A-life, so I want to experiment.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble getting things to work. I can't get past the whole NAT issue that allows peers to load locally? I'm not a networking whiz, as you can tell. I can't set up the client program at home (through cable modem and router) or at work (yes, my bosses will be highly impressed) via who knows what type of networking.

Is there someone out there who can explain the whole Port 5000000000 stuff, and get me up and running? Since I'm generally at work (I am a programmer), I can only try things at home when I can, so this process may take a while.

I'd appreciate some assistance. I'd be suprised if others aren't in the same boat.

Thanks!

I did just as you said, and after a couple minutes plants & bugs started appearing!

Thanks for your help. It's amazing how much difference a more detailed explanation and help waiting-in-the-wings can make.

I'm logged into your server (http://www.davidandangela.ws/Terrarium), and though the action is little slow (after itch 1.1 got booted), I'm looking forward to joining in.

Your help is appreciated. Thanks again. I'd like to plug your site for you (http://www.davidandangela.ws/Terrarium/documentation/about.aspx). I've not had the chance to read much of it, but it looks like a much more user-friendly than anywhere else.

The lack of response leads me to believe that the Terrarium project is indeed DEAD.

'Tis a pity, I think I could have learned a thing or two.

I'm not sure Terrarium will help you with #1, and it's AI applications are limited at best, but I wouldn't mind helping you set up your environment.  You need to configure your router to make incoming IP traffic on port 50,000 go to the machine that you want to run the Terrarium client on.  (You also need to ensure that it will allow outbound traffic on port 50,000.)  Then, if you have a software firewall running, you need to configure it to allow the Terrarium client to send / receive data using port 50,000.  Finally, in the Terrarium client, check the NAT support checkbox.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them here or at http://www.davidandangela.ws/Blogs/TerrariumBlog/index.aspx

Thank you so much for answering! I will mess with it this weekend. If I have more questions (that's probably inevitable) I will write again.

The NAT support checkbox wasn’t too difficult to set. J I'll let you know about the rest.

Thanks again!!!

I agree, David's site is more helpful than most of the information about Terrarium on the net. It may be the last functioning server out there. ;)
