TERRARIUM SERVER DIFFICULTIES After several days of aggravation about Terrarium I have gotten one up and running nbsp;at least in terrarium mode. Here is the process that I used for anyone frustrated enough to try.
THE ERROR (V1.1, actually V1.0.21.281) “The Terrarium server is experiencing temporary difficulties. This is probably why you aren't receiving any animals. Please bear with us while we get the issue resolved.br/> SCREW VERSION 1.1 nbsp;Constant Failures Don’t bother with version 1.1 (in the Help area it identifies itself as V1.0.21.281). Personally, this means it is not version 1.1, but I didn’t write it. This version had stack overflow errors when adding new creatures to a private terrarium, and never successfully connected with the server or added any creatures (supposedly the server was down at the time, but that apparently went down in December 2002, but the web authors failed to identify that).
PROBLEM RESOLUTION (That somewhat worked for me) The actual fix that worked for me was to uninstall v1.1 and install version 1.0. I chose to ignore all of the DLL error reports and it runs fine, at least in Terrarium mode; and would probably run well in world mode if the server was running. I have built creatures for it and successfully added them to the environment. Also, the port 50000 issue is not likely the problem since it is not normally a blocked port. I am using the WinXP built in firewall and even with it up the port is still open. -- I hope this works for you!
In the process of getting v1.1 to work I followed the steps below. I share this not because I expect you to follow it but because I am still frustrated and must let someone know the level of interest developers have in an interesting tool/game of this sort nbsp;possibly to convince the designers that this project has more merit that they apparently ascribe to it. 1. Installed version 1.1 2. Found out that v1.1 constantly fails to connect 3. Left it for several days hoping the server was actually having temporary problems that were being addressed. 4. Went through the knowledge base and found only other frustrated users. 5. Attempted to setup a private terrarium (got stack overflow problems) 6. Uninstalled v1.1 and Reinstalled v1.0 (same server connect problems, and a whole load of DLL errors nbsp;gave up trying to resolve the DLL issues rather quickly) 7. Uninstalled v1.0 and Reinstalled v1.1 (same problems) 8. Pinging the server returned UNABLE TO REACH SERVER failures 9. Uninstalled Terrarium and Reinstalled the .NET Framework (5 hours work) 10. Reinstalled v1.1 (same problems) 11. Uninstalled v1.1 and Reinstalled v1.0 12. Found that v1.0 works well in terrarium mode despite the DLL error reports, and that I can download animals from somewhere (I don’t know where) since I cannot connect to the http://www.terrariumgame.net/terrarium server.
One thing I have not found are addresses for alternate servers. If anyone knows of any, reply to this posting and let everyone know where they are. I would like to watch others introduce new creatures without having to hunt them down and bag them myself.
