Simpler example of SmartClient web service file retrieval than AppraisalWorkbench?

I'm an asp.net developer taking the plunge into the smartclient world. I'm developing a protoype app to manage, maintain amd update other installed apps on the client's desktop. I'm trying to emulate the AppraisalServiceAgent for my file downloading module, but frankly I'm a bit in over my head. Any less complex smartclient examples out there in c# that consume a web service for file downloading? Thanks for any help!!
