Is it over ? Naka and Mari is too much dominating in numbers to introduce succesfully even a "2x superior to Naka/Mari" more than x hours.

Creating an open source / close source team to develop a new "Terrarium-like" platform that would be more oriented toward long-term value, better competitions system, integration of non-developper (A Creature Studio that would compose the code and compile it into .DLL)
etc ..  maybe we could bring new sponsors into the project while trying to keep Microsoft .. maybe we could generate more attentions from non-coders and include ads to interest some sponsors .. maybe we could keep the server source and core client source close and create an open source team compose of 3D and RPG freaks to do the visual/gameplay part of the client .. maybe we could even develop something that would be a sandbox for developper and at the same time a game for non-coder ..   all kinds of maybe .. 

Please tell me what you think about those idea and share yours with us
Id like to hear the Terrarium team members about how they would feel about some non-microsoft people starting a project influenced my their work.

1>  Create like a lifespan type thing, so once one or two creatures have dominated, after a while, they are blacklisted and annhililated. (To kill Mari check out the sourcecode, and look for ecploits where there are weaknesses.

2> I dont know, but I want to see upgrade to .NET 2.0 because you have to pay for earlier versions

3> I dont think so, because the entire point of terrarium is competition between developers. I would rather them spend more time on porting Terrrarium to .NET 2.0 and make it so you cant have another naka and mari. (Maybe add some other features to make the game more like a game.)

1> Not a bad idea. This is what I would prefer: After each week, the Terrarium is reset. 3 winners for the past week is declared. Everything restart in the Terrarium, except those 3 winners have to wait 4 days before entering the terrarium again. At the end of the week .. 3 new winners and another reset etc...   The logic here is that it would allow everyone to comes with new species that COULD possibly proper and dominate .. the stronger would get ready to welcome the 3 past week bad criters and have their chance. Right now it is virtually impossible even for a critter 3 or 4 time superior to the dominating species (Nake, Mari) to beat them or even elevate themself to half the numbers of them. 

What do you think of that ?

2 and 3> Don't know if I get excited about porting Terrarium to .NET 2.0. If another crew get to develop a new version of Terrarium or a Terrarium alike it's logic to go to .NET 2.0 but without a total rewrite.. I don't know.. I would rather wait for WinFX for a rewrite. Before WinFX I don't think the Microsoft Terraium team would get support from Microsoft to write a totally new version of the Terrarium; .NET 2.0 is not different enough nor important enough to allow promotion budget .. with WinFX, Avalon etc it will make sens to do so ..  www.gotwinfx.com ?

1> Hmm. I like the idea of a reset, except... I week is a little too short. How about two? With a one week "cool down" for the top bugs the same reasons as yours. Also, maybe make it top 10, not 3, and make it impossible for the person who got top 3 to put any bug in again for a month or two, or else they would keep dominating. (Otherwise they would just keep putting  in each week, the numbers would be lower, but theyd still dominate)

2> and 3> Well, put it to ya this way, an outdated version of .NET costs 120 some dollars. Most amateur programmers can't afford that for outdated software. In the meantime, they offer .NET 2.0 and VB .NET 2005 Express FREE!

1> We both agree on the reset rule. I think that if the Terrarium team is to do a final version of the Terrarium, it should be that.

2-3> I wonder if they would be able to creatre a .NET 2.0 Component sandbox into their .NET 1.0 based Terrarium version. It would allow .NET 2.0 people to enter their .NET 2.0 creature into the Terrarium with a simple modification to the actual Terrarium version.

ANYONE FROM THE TERRARIUM TEAM TO CONFIRM that it would be possible ? -> a new version of the Terrarium that would need the user to install .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 and that would, from the .NET 1.1 code create another sandbox for .NET 2.0 creature. My guest as a developer is that it would be possible and that there are more than one way to implement this.  And if it would be possible, would Microsoft be motivated to allow you (the team) some time and ressource to implement this in order to promote the .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005 .NET Express ?   If I was at Microsoft, I would surely found the good strings to pull for making that project work; it make business sens to MS. That would be a perfect way to promote VS.NET 2005 Express. The actual promotion campaing isn't very exciting.

Just a sandbox??? I think it better to just make the server read em both! Make em both work to gether. Maybe promote developers to try the new technology, possibly get some subscribers to the pro version. (Forgive me if I misunderstood. Did you mean a on computer testing, or another terrarium ecosystem for 2.0?)

Sorry. I didn't explain well. 

A (runtime) sandbox is what Terrarium use to execute our Dll in (creatures). It is called a sandbox because it's limiting the Dll in is action. ie: limited namespace, limited rights etc.
Now you know why you cannot write to the harddrive, scratch registers or or external webservices: it's all because of the sandbox your dll is run into.

Now, the idea for .Net 2.0 is to create a new runtime sandbox, into the actual version of Terrarium, that would detect if your creature use .Net 1.1 or .Net 2.0 and then run it with the good framework. It would need .Net 1.1 framework AND .Net 2.0 framework to run this "improved" version of the Terrarium: 

 - The .Net 1.1 to run the Terrarium and the 1.1 creatures
 - The .Net 2.0 to run the 2.0 creatures and maybe a part of the new runtime sandbox architecture.

Allow developers with the old tech to continue, while letting us bold beta testers give it a shot! Sweet!

I think the problem with Terrarium is that it's not possible anymore to add your own creatures (server is having problems for a couple of months now). I would like to give my 'Itch' another shot in dominating terrarium, but just cannot introduce it into the ecosystem. I don't think the problem is that Naka/Mari are dominating Terrarium, but the problem is that nobody is playing the game...

I hope the Terrarium game (and it's creators) will wake up from their long sleep, and refresh the game for .NET 2.0 !! (beta 2 is coming soon now...)

Wait, di you just say Beta 2??? Does that include Visual Studio Express??
