I get the same error trying to install the VB Source on a clean Windows 2003 Server. I get a different error installing on my development PC, something like "Previous installation found. Uninstall previous installation and try again. I did have a previous installation and what with all the problems other people were having thought I'd install the new release. Problem is there is no entry in the Uninstall Programs for the previous release. OK, I deleted the TaskVision folders and tried again to no avail. I then deleted every entry in the registry I could find. Still no joy.
*** BEWARE *** Do not use msi (Windows Installer) packages on Windows XP. It has problems.
One thing I did notice in scanning thru the posts here is that a significant number of people running XP along with virus checking software are getting their systems trashed. I had a similar experience with a client installing one of my apps on a similar setup. Microsoft Support worked with me on the problem for weeks. It had to do with ocxs and dlls not being registered properly. As soon as we would find and fix one another would crop up. I was told to remake my installs using the Package and Deployment Wizard and that the msi installer (Windows Installer) was the culprit, not to use it. I finally asked the client to fdisk and re-install XP. This, along with using the PDW, cleared up the problem. (However, the PDW has its own gotchas.)
In my estimation virus checking software can be worse then a virus. Take proper precautions and you don't need it. Users need to be informed, they should not have access to CD ROMs or floppy drives and they should not have connections to the Internet. (Anyway that would be the ideal world.) |
