VB2008 3.5 SP1 Error Loading Windows XP

I have downloaded vb 2008 3.5sp1. I am now having problems deploying (on CD) ClickOnce on clients pc with OS XP.

Error: System.Data.Entity Version 3.5.0.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first.

There was no problem before the download. The host machine OS Vista 64bit.

Property Settings:

Prerequisites; Windows Installer 3.1 Checked;

Net Framwork 3.5 SP1 Checked;

Download Prerequisites from the components vender’s web site Checked;

I have tried repairing 3.5 sp1 in case there was a missing file.

Can anyone help.

Hi hemo,

I found a blog talking about this issue.
http://blogs.blackmarble.co.uk/blogs/msteeples/archive/2008/08/12/your-clickonce-clients-complain-of-a-missing-system-data-entity-reference-in-the-gac.aspx

Have you use the new feature listed in the blog? If you have used one of them, your users will require .net 3.5 sp1. Otherwise, they don't need to install sp1.

You can get round this by either not using the new features, or by marking .net 3.5 sp1 as a pre-requisite in your ClickOnce manifests

Many thanks for the info. Yes I am using Create Desktop Shortcut, (Which was the principal reason for installing SP1). Not using this option allows new projects to be installed without error.

I have had no success with the other alternative /span>by marking .net 3.5 sp1 as a pre-requisite in your ClickOnce manifests/span>. I have checked the prerequisite 3.5 SP1 also tried checking both 3.5 and 3.5 SP1 but still get the error. Am I missing something?

Two other interesting points:

Once the project has been published with the Manifests Create Desktop Shortcut checked, subsequent publishing still shows the error even though the all the Manifests features have been unchecked. Which suggest some reference remains.

The project published with SP1 and Manifests Create Desktop Shortcut checked appears to load without error on PC’s using Vista but not XP.

Hi hemo,

Here is another test, publish your ClickOnce application via CD. Select "Download prerequisites from the same location as my application". It will package Framework along with your published folder. Let your user try to install that version. The test can exclude network issue.

Kira -

If his customers have .Net 3.5 installed, but not SP-1, does changing the target to .Net 3.5 SP-1 still install the service pack? I thought people had complained here that it checked for .Net 3.5, found it, and then continued, without updating it to SP-1.

Just wondering,

Hi RobinDotNet,

Based on my test, it will check to update to SP1 for a computer already have .NET Framework 3.5 installed.

Thanks all for the help. Unfortunately even with the applied suggestions the error remains when installing on PC’s with running XP. I have now tried to install on four independent PC’s with XP all displaying the error.

Uncheck all the Manifest options and the application installs without error.

I think my best option is to distribute with the Manifest options unchecked as I feel in a ‘black holeon this issue.

If you install .Net 3.5 SP-1 on those computers running XP, does that solve your problems? It almost seems to me that you have .NET 3.5 but not SP-1 installed.
