Hi
When I try to install my one click app from url on a client PC which is behind an ISA Server (pretty standard configuration - many companies use windows server + isa server), I get the error 407 with message 'proxy authentication required'. What is the problem and how can I fix it?
Thanks
Regards

hi Yahya
For this issue, it has been confirmed as a known issue of Whidbey. The root cause is that .Net deployment API did not use the default proxy and credentials to access the remoteclickonce files.
To workaround this issue, we can set useDefaultCredentials to true in machine.config, like this: <defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">

Thanks. Any easy way to update machine.config with this change on a number of PCs in a network? I am worried that some prospect clients may download this app andmay not have the technical skill to edit machine.config on their own.
Thanks Again

hello, I get same error at a client who uses ISA 2000 and 2006.
but my network is also using ISA 2006 but I was able to resolve this issue by applying the hotfix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917952
Is this in .Net 2.0 or 3.0? <defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">
becuase I cannot find this in the machine.config file for .Net 2.0
any thoughts? |

where is the machine.config file? Please dont say that its on the client machince, cause that would make this a verybad workaround. |
| Kommi Monday, July 02, 2007 9:07 PM |
I saw http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917952 is available, but this doesn't seem to install on .NET 3.0 SP1 (I assume it wouldn't be installed on .NET 2.0 SP1 also?)
Isn't it about time ClickOnce proxy authorization support was included in .NET 2.0 or 3.0 SP1/SP2 "out of the box"?
Are you seriously suggesting to patch an entire network of client machines at an organization?
This really is embarrassingly poor on Microsoft's part.
Internet Explorer prompts for Proxy Authentication credentials, why not do the same with ClickOnce? And if the default credentials in the machine.config is desirable, why not include that as part of a service pack or release?
Any idea if or when this fix will see the light of day officially?

I've just run into this today and can't believe it. Microsoft were talking about fixing this back in 2005. It's weird.
The lack (until 3.5SP1) of Firefox support prevented ClickOnce from taking off in the B2C market, and the lack of proxy authentication support has prevented it from taking off in the B2B market. In house applications are all it has been good for really. Which is a shame, as it's potentially a really good way to distribute and update software.
C'mon.

This is a terrible problem, and could be a show stopper on a project with more than 12 months development. What channels can I go through to escalate this issue with Microsoft? We are an ISV partner of Microsoft and even suggest to our clients to use SBS.
It's hard to commit resources to Microsoft technologies because we never know what platform components they are going to starve off and what they are going to maintain or develop. |

Thank you for the solution using App.config. My problem is that i am working in a smart device project... there is not app.config when you are working using the Compact Framework.
How can i do ?
Thanks for your help

Hi,
What if the proxy credentials aren't the default credentials?
Thanks.

I've seen alot of posts with the following suggestion:
<configuration>
<system.net>
<defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">
:
</defaultProxy>
</system.net>
</configuration> however, my machine.config seems to have a totally differnt format, and looks like this <sectionGroup name="system.net" type="System.Net.Configuration.NetSectionGroup, /span>">
<section name="authenticationModules" type="System.Net.Configuration.AuthenticationModulesSection/span> "/>
<section name="connectionManagement" type="System.Net.Configuration.ConnectionManagementSection/span> "/>
<section name="defaultProxy" type="System.Net.Configuration.DefaultProxySection, /span>"/>
<sectionGroup name="mailSettings" type="System.Net.Configuration.MailSettingsSectionGroup, /span>">
<section name="smtp" type="System.Net.Configuration.SmtpSection, /span>"/>
</sectionGroup>
<section name="requestCaching" type="System.Net.Configuration.RequestCachingSection, /span>"/>
<section name="settings" type="System.Net.Configuration.SettingsSection, /span>"/>
<section name="webRequestModules" type="System.Net.Configuration.WebRequestModulesSection, /span>"/>
</sectionGroup>
Questions: 1. why does my machine.config file use different XML tags? 2. Any idea on how to implement the recommended changed in a machine.config file with the format above? |

Bumping to the top. There are countless posts on this and I have yet to see a meaningful response from microsoft starting as far back as 2005. I don't understand why someone can't simply acknowledge and maybe explain why this seemingly simple obstacle (proxy authentication) can not be resolved? |

Bumping to the top. There are countless posts on this and I have yet to see a meaningful response from microsoft starting as far back as 2005. I don't understand why someone can't simply acknowledge and maybe explain why this seemingly simple obstacle (proxy authentication) can not be resolved? Adding my voice to the list ... the company I work for has developed and is marketing an application deployed via ClickOnce that has the potential to be used by literally tens or hundreds of thousands of users - many of which are behind authenticating ISA proxies. It seems incredible to me that Microsoft have known about this bug for 4+ years and as yet have not developed any real fixes or even provided workarounds that don't require modifying config files on client machines - hardly ideal or evn feasible when you don't have any control over the user's desktop!! Even the one hotfix that was provided (for .NET Framework v2.0) no longer works since the release of various service packs for v2.0. Never mind 3.0, 3.5, etc. What do we need to do to get somebody at Microsoft to show some interest in a bug that is preventing the adoption of their product (ClickOnce) in any meaningful way by businesses who want to use it in the real world? There's three pieces of the puzzle (.NET, ISA and ClickOnce) - and they are all Microsoft products! Is it too much to hope for that they can be made to work together? Dave |

Oh god. This is really bad. If i can't deploy to the 80-90% of the real world scenarios in companies (win server, isa server) what use has ClickOnce?
I was hoping that this was fixed in 3.1 |

has anyone downloaded google chrome, that appears to use click once for the installer and it works through my proxy, where other apps i deploy don't work. maybe google found a way to fix it either that or they are not really using click once and just trying to make microsoft look stupid |

I can not believe that Google would (a) use .Net, or (b) use ClickOnce. They consider Microsoft to be a major competitor, so I am sure they have developed their own technology to install their applications.

Have you got any solution to change the recommended settings for your different config file? If so, please share your solution.

Actually Google Chrome does the initial install via ClickOnce: http://aimeegurl.com/2008/12/29/google-chrome-on-click-once-deployment-2/Install Chrome and you will see an entry in your ClickOnce apps folder "goog...app_9a8dfcd080ccb114_0001.0002_142b808a730e71b0",this is just the installer and not Chrome. Right tool for the job. Bro Num |

I know it looks very similar, but I have a hard time believing that Google, one of Microsoft's biggest competitors, would use Microsort's deployment technology, when they could easily write the same thing themselves. RobinDotNet Click here to visit my ClickOnce blog! |

This is just getting silly now and going completely of topic. Go to the chrome download page: http://www.google.com/chromeOpen up fiddler and go through the install process and you will see the following: http://dl.google.com/update2/1.2.183.7/clickonce_bootstrap.exe.manifestWith the following response body:
